Circuit information

The Australian Superbike World Championship is held in Phillip Island, approximately 15 kilometers south-east of Melbourne. The first race in Phillip Island was held in the early 1920's, as usual on closed public roads. As both motorcycles and cars became faster and therefore more dangerous, a new circuit was built close to the original circuit which was opened for racing in 1956. Due to the topography of the area the track has often suffered extensive damage therefore it was closed and reopened several times in its history. The track itself is set in a natural amphitheatre which affords unparalleled viewing for spectators. The current track's grand reopening was in 1989 with the celebration of MotoGP arrival to Australia.

The 4.4 kilometer long circuit, which runs anti-clockwise, has 12 turns of which 4 are right hand corners and 8 left-handers. The track is considered as one of the best hybrid circuits which can host both motorcycle and car racing events as well.
