Circuit information
The Red Bull US Grand Prix is held on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, a suburb of Indianapolis, USA. The circuit was built in 1909 and it is the largest sport facility of the world from the number of spectators point of view: it has a permanent seating capacity of 275.000 while the infield seating raises it to approximately 400.000. the Motor Speedway is a two and a half mile, nearly rectangular oval with dimensions that have remained essentially unchanged since its inception: four 1/4 mile turns, two 5/8 mile long straightaways between the fourth and first and second and third turns, and two 1/8 mile short straightaways. In order to improve safety of the track some 3.2 million bricks were built in the track hence its nickname, the Brickyard.
In 1998 a new infield circuit was built using the western section of the oval circuit which hosted amongst others the Formula 1 Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007, the same track which first hosted the MotoGP in Indianapolis in 2008. The 4.2 kilometer long circuit which runs anti-clockwise has 16 turns of which 8 are right hand corners and 8 left-handers which provide several overtaking opportunities. In contrast to the other US based MotoGP race, the Indianapolis one hosts all three categories (MotoGP, 250cc and 125cc).
